‘Without a shred of evidence’? In the post you are commenting on I mentioned the survey by Policy Exchange in the UK that shows over 40 percent of UK Muslims support at least some aspects of Sharia law. And so, we see the proliferation of Sharia Councils, now eight-five in all, that are having an ever greater role as a parallel legal system, especially in family law matters.

You should also take a look at this global report by the Pew Research Centre on attitudes to Sharia in many of our main immigrant source countries.

I won’t repeat the all the information I cited in an earlier post compiled by the Civitas think tank about the effect this is having on Muslim women, in particular, creating a parallel – and highly regressive – quasi-legal system. Here is their summation:

‘Sharia courts operating in Britain may be handing down rulings that are inappropriate to this country because they are linked to elements in Islamic law that are seriously out of step with trends in Western legislation that derive from the values of the Enlightenment and are inherent in modern codes of human rights. Sharia rulings contain great potential for controversy and may involve acts contrary to UK legal norms and human rights legislation.’

As per usual, human rights and feminist groups are – with some honourable exceptions – missing in action on all this, they are on female genital mutilation. They prefer to see women from Muslim backgrounds subjected to lower standards of protection than others. After all, best not risk being of ‘Islamophobia’, after all. If that is not racist, I don't know what is.

All this represents a cultural see-change, the long term effects of which don’t bear thinking about.
