Trump is a supreme narcissist whose only motivation is to secure public adulation. He has no political agenda to make the USA an autocracy on philosophical grounds, but that does not mean that his self-serving actions are not laying the groundwork for erosion of the liberal democracy. While his actions to dismantle the authority and independence of institutions such as the Justice Department and intelligence agencies is well documented, the complicity of the Republican senate and a republican-stacked court, a swathe of republican governors and state judiciaries many with gerrymandered electoral processes, a significant right-wing media bloc prepared to endorse everything he does, the tacit consent of the evangelical christian establishment, the flourishing of right wing militias and organisations, and the unswerving support of his political base are all evidence that self-serving interests in the USA can permit the erosion of democratic principles. The nation is allowing its own erosion.Where is the resistance from the legal and constitutional framework? Unlike Caesar, while autocracy may not be Trump's goal, like Caesar he has created the opportunity for Augustus to morph the republic into a dictatorship. It's now a smaller leap in that direction
