Link back to commentPeter describes my comment as "bizarre". What is bizarre is that he thinks I'm claiming a "moral equivalency" between the Chinese Communist Party and Trump. It's obvious that my comment does no such thing. My comment referred to Peter's drift into the political right's assertion that 'Western civilisation' is inherently superior and is threatened by immigrants who come from Muslim countries. In particular, his claim that Australia is threatened in this way is refuted by the facts of everyday life here and the utter lack of evidence that some kind of Muslim subversion is happening here.
However, when we look to the US it is apparent that its current fallen and broken-down state is, in large part, due to the zealotry of evangelical and other hard right Christians. We also see the beginnings of insurrections from heavily armed white 'Western civilisation' adherents who, for example, recently occupied the Michigan state capitol and prevented the legislature from sitting.
Muslims have nothing to do with the breakdown of civilised political norms that is occurring there.
It's Peter who's indulging in whataboutism by playing up fanciful threats and downplaying where the threats are really coming from.
