I've invited Peter to examine imperialism, using the example of Indonesia, but he has failed to engage. I suspect that is because, once you start looking at religions as historical entities enmeshed in the cultures of a society in a particular place, talk of what religions 'essentially are', what they 'stand for' throughout their long histories becomes impossible to sustain.
