Thanks Andrew. I don’t disagree with what you say here. It is legitimate, indeed an obviously good thing, for groups who suffer discrimination because of race, for example, to band together to work for redress and in making the case refer to their shared experiences. If this is what you mean by identity politics, then I am absolutely OK with that.

However there is a difference between people of similar background who suffer discrimination banding together to ensure their basic rights are respected, and campaigning for a differentiated set of rights based on identity, which is what I contend identity politics does.
