Yvette, if I may: Religion is, broadly, exactly about so many different prescriptions of how the "crooked timber of humanity" ought to go about perfecting itself. In that sense, the Marxist belief in the perfectability of humanity is merely one of many varieties - and quite in keeping with his sometime characterisation as "last of the Lutherans".
